Chapter 1 Literature Review
1.1 Previous Studies on Mark Twain’s Verbal Humor
Mark Twain, pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, is one of the most eminent humorists in the world. Famous for his humor and satire in his literary works, Mark Twain is the representative personage of American critical realism. His life on Mississippi river makes a remarkable influence on his writing career. “Sam Clemens himself originated from the antebellum border slave state of Missouri, and much of Twain’s mature work focuses on characters straddling and transgressing borders---mysterious strangers, outcasts, twins, mix-race individual, impostors, travelers and so on” (Joseph Goeke 2012: 9). In western countries, the researches emphasized on Mark Twain’s verbal humor are mainly about the innate character of Mark Twain’s verbal humor and the derivation of Mark Twain’s verbal humor. And this too, is something new in the tradition of Southwestern humor”. Joseph Goeke (2012) revolves around the topic of the border life accounts for Mark Twain’s verbal humor. Both physical and geographical borderland as well as social borderland attribute to Mark Twain’s verbal humor. Goeke holds that the cultural and political background have impact on Mark Twain’s writing and claims that both superiority over others and incongruity are the causes of Mark Twain’s humor. David Sloane (2010) makes a comparison bet
