4.1 Introduction   

On  the  basis  of  our  research  design,  we  firstly  select  all  the  entries  from  the appointed  dictionary  OALD-8  to  build  grammatical  categories  tagging  database  for OALD-8, then select all V-ing forms to build grammatical categories tagging database for  V-ing  forms  in  OALD-8.  Thirdly,  we  remove  those  disturbed  ones,  such  as multiword  lexical  items  (i.e.  safe  keeping,  clay  pigeon  shooting),  bound  morphemes and  combining  forms  (i.e.  childbearing,  churchgoing).  Additionally,  those  derived from  noun,  adjective  or  adverb  like  eventing,  loathing  or  froing  are  also  excluded from  the  list.  In  other  words,  the  V-ing  entries  which  do  not  meet  the  criteria  are rejected by our study. Finally, we get 951 valid V-ing forms. Based  on  the  self-built  grammatical  categories  tagging  database,  we  count  the number  and  proportion  of  V-ing  forms  with  independent  lexical  status.  An  overall display of the statistic results is listed in Table 4.1.

Conclusion

The major findings of this study can be summarized in the following aspects.
