摘要:本文是一篇英语语言学论文,本文通过对弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫《到灯塔去》中“非存在”和“存在”记忆写作的分析,得出以下结论:在形式上,弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫运用了H形结构、时间蒙太奇和多重内聚焦等手法,揭示了人物的内心世界。

笔者认为首先,H形结构将“无”与“有”记忆统一起来,既叙述了基本事件,又描述了人物的内心世界。其次,时间蒙太奇通过“非存在”记忆连接不同时期的“存在”记忆。它把不同时期的经历联系起来,展示了他们内心世界的变化和复杂性。第三,多重内聚焦通过一个“非存在”记忆来比较不同人物的“存在”记忆。通过比较同一个人物对同一个人物的印象,揭示人物内心世界的多样性。

1 Introduction


1.1 Literature Review

Foreign Studies

Since its publication, foreign scholars have studied To the Lighthouse from variousperspectives, and the main approaches are as follows: feminist criticism, modernistcriticism, and psychological criticism.

Feminist criticism focuses on gender harmony, androgynous concepts, and bisexualimages. Derbyshire (355-356) focused on gender harmony, and regarded the mutualunderstanding between Mr. Ramsay and Mrs. Ramsay as the harmony between men and women. In Feminism and Art, Marder (72) explored the conflict between Mr.Ramsay’s male principle and Mrs. Ramsay’s female principle, to reveal Woolf’s viewson patriarchy and her expectations of androgyny. Heilbrun (162) emphasized theandrogynous concepts and examined male and female’s different reactions to dailythings. Additionally, the study of bisexual imagery in the novel is important. Bazin (173)explored images of “the lighthouse” and the “middle tree”, and regarded the two imagesas archetypal ones with bisexual connotations. Praat (417-422) analyzed the relationsbetween Mrs. Ramsay and Mr. Ramsay, to demonstrate the sexual imagery in the novel.Mepham (78) stated that the growth of characters in the novel actually reflects theduality of gender. Rutledge (73-101) explored Woolf’s feminine ideas through the casesof Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe. Lidoff (43-47) proposed that the novel repeats thematernal mode which Woolf wished to relinquish and to preserve.

1.2 Proposal and Research Questions

The thesis intends to explore Virginia Woolf’s “non-being” and “being” memorywriting in To the Lighthouse, to reveal how did Woolf use “non-being” and “being” memory to write a novel, to describe the inner world, and to express her thoughts. Thereare two main research questions: (1) What is the form of “non-being” and “being”memory writing in To the Lighthouse? (2) What is the significance of “non-being” and“being” memory writing in To the Lighthouse?

Significance of the Study

There’s no study on “non-being” and “being” memory writing in To the Lighthouseat home and abroad, yet “non-being” and “being” memory is of great importance inVirginia Woolf’s works. As she once said: “If life has a foundation, it must be memory.”(qtd. in Lyndall Gordon 8). It is academically significant to conduct a research of “non-being” and “being” memory writing in To the Lighthouse.

Some scholars have mentioned the use of memory in To the Lighthouse. Blotner’s(556) “Mythic Patterns in ‘To the Lighthouse’” indicates that readers can understandMrs. Ramsay better through Lily Briscoe’s memory. Brown (39) regarded “memory”as one factor that assembles the unique space-time structure in the novel, because itconnects the real and psychological world together. In China, a few scholars also paidattention to the time-space structure in To the Lighthouse, and they mentioned the roleof memory in this structure.
