Interpersonal conflicts mostly start with language conflicts. This study applies pragmatic theory to analyze the structural characteristics and causes of conflict talk in the medical context, and aims to help people deeply understand how conflict talk is formed and developed, so as to improve people’s awareness of using certain strategies to mitigate the verbal conflict, thereby reducing the negative impact of conflict talk on interpersonal communication. Specifically to the research subject of this paper, a medical drama, in which the conflict talk is around medical problems. This kind of professional practice in the form of conversation, which takes place in a specific environment, aims to complete a certain task, and is carried out by participants with a specific institutional identity, is called institutional discourse. Obviously, the conflict talk studied in this paper occur in the hospital, aiming at curing the disease and saving the people, and arise between doctors or between doctors and patients. Therefore, the conflict talks in this paper can be called medical conflict talk.Medical conflict talk is institutional, which is different from daily conflict talk. This research aims to find the unique composition and causes of conflict talk in medical context, and attempt to put forward several strategies.

Chapter Ⅱ Literature Review

2.1 Definition of Conflict Talk

Different scholars have different understandings and interpretations of conflict talk, and its definitions generally show the characteristics of diversity.

Grimshaw (1990) first proposes the term “conflict talk” in his proceedings Conflict Talk: Sociolinguistic Investigation of Arguments in Conversations to refer to the “verbal interaction in which participants take alternative positions, whether reconcilable or mutually exclusive, on issues of common concern.” According to Honda (2002), conflict talk can be used from two different levels. In a narrow sense, “conflict is a speech activities in which two parties attempt to maintain their own positions by means of opposition.” In a broad sense, “conflict talk can be viewed as a process of opposition which includes not only the manifestation of opposition, but the whole process of inducement, initiation, development, and management of opposition.”

According to Zhao Yingling (2004), conflict talk is a general term, and many speech acts and events can be included in this concept. She believes that when one side of communication opposes the other party’s speech, behavior or communicating parties hold different views or opinions on someone or something, conflict talk will occur.
