een  Sister  Carrie  and  Vanity  Fair  from  the  perspective  of  mythological archetypal criticism, and explored the common mythological archetypes of the heroines in the two novels. 

This  paper  analyzed  the  similar  social  environment  faced  by  the  two  heroines  and the similar choices they made to satisfy their greedy desires, that is, they sold their bodies and morals to meet their material needs at all costs. This paper holds that desire itself is neither good  nor  bad,  the  key  lies  in  reasonable  control,  do  not  hurt  others  in  order  to  satisfy  the desire,  and  do  not  ignore  the  moral  and  spiritual  needs  when  persisting  in  material  pursuit. Although many scholars have done a great deal of research on Vanity Fair and Sister Carrie, few  have  compared  the  heroines  of  these  two  novels  from  the  perspective  of  mythological archetypal criticism.

The significance of this paper is to provide a new perspective for the study of these two novels. By analyzing the same mythological archetypes of Rebecca and Carrie, this paper explores the human desire that runs through all mankind. It is expected to help readers better understand the two novels. 

Chapter two Literature review

2.1 Overview of the mythological archetypal criticism

This  part  introduces  the  definition,  characteristics,  origin  and  development  of  mythological archetypal criticism. 

2.1.1 Definition and characteristics of mythological archetypal criticism

Mythological archetypal criticism is one of the most important literary criticism, originated in Britain in the early 20th century. It was highly appraised by Wellek, and regarded as one of the  international  literary  criticism.  Mythological  archetypal  criticism  has  no  unified theoretical  name,  it  is  called  mythological  criticism  or  archetypal  criticism  (Ye,  2011).  Ye proposed to unify the theory into “myth-archetypal criticism” or “archetypal criticism” for short.  Mythological  archetypal  criticism  links  archetypes  with  literature.  Archetype  is  the accumulation  of  primitive  human  experience  and  destiny.  Among  the  numerous  archetypes, myth  archetypes  are  the  most  resonant  among  human  beings.  Myth  reflects  the  emotional sustenance and good wishes of human beings. Symbolic figures, themes, images and rituals could be regarded as archetypes if they have universal meaning (Stephen, 2005). Archetypes are  carriers  of  cultural  information  and  play  an  indispensable  and  unique  role  in  culture (Bodkin, 1963).
