4.1 Eve in the Bible in the Vanity Fair and Sister Carrie

This part mainly expounds that Eve in the Bible was the prototype of Rebecca in Vanity Fair and Carrie in Sister Carrie, and summarizes.

4.1.1 Eve in the Vanity Fair—Rebecca

Born  in  the  Victorian  era  of  England,  Rebecca  confronted  society  and  destiny  in  order  to satisfy personal desires and continued to degenerate, perfectly in keeping with the image of the fallen and rebellious “Eve”. This was very rare in literature before the birth of Vanity Fair. Rebecca and Eve could be found to have many similarities compared to Eve in the Bible.

In the first place, she was like Eve in the Bible, a man’s spouse and appendage, who had  the  misfortune  to  fall  against  fate.  And  they  were  punished  after  their  desires  were satisfied, and they even dominated the fate of their husbands, who were punished and exiled together. According to Genesis, God made woman out of one of Adam’s ribs. It can be seen that in the Bible, the positioning of the relationship between men and women is that women are men’s garniture, women belong to men, is a part of men’s bodies. Thus, it is not surprising that the emergence of a male society was also such a relationship between Adam and Eve, the ancestors of mankind, as documented in the Bible. First there are men, then there are women, women are created because men are bored and lonely. In the nineteenth century, Britain was a male-dominated society with a developed economy, but the gap between the rich and the poor was gradually widened by the cruel exploitation of the bourgeoisie and the new aristocracy. People  in  the  lower  classes  might  not  be  able  to  ensure  adequate  food  and  clothing,  while those in the upper classes, the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy, lived an extravagant life. 

Chapter Five Conclusion

5.1 Main findings

Rebecca and Carrie share many of the same characteristics. They have the beauty and evil of Pandora, and the temptation and cruelty of Sirens. Like Eve, they are the subordinate of men, but  they  are  brave  to  challenge  the  authority.  Although  they  are  becoming  more  and  more depraved  while  satisfying  their  greedy  desires,  their  rebellious  spirit  and  courage  to  fight against  unfair  society  and  fate  are  worthy  of  praise.  They  are  also  persistent,  tenacious, optimistic wanderers.
