Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Stylistic Variation

Due to the fact that the study attempts to explore characteristics of CCTV newsanchors’ stylistic variation in the column Anchors Expounding Lianbo, the termstylistic variation is supposed to be defined and analyzed. In this section, definitionsof stylistic variation and relevant studies on it will be presented.

2.1.1 Definitions of Stylistic Variation

Before dealing with the notion of stylistic variation, relevant definitions of styleshould be introduced first.

Eckert (2001) defines style as “a clustering of linguistic resources, and anassociation of that clustering with social meaning” (Eckert 2001: 123). According toNikolas Coupland (2007), style refers to “ways of speaking——how speakers use theresource of language variation to make meaning in social encounters. Stylisticanalysis is the analysis of how style resources are put to work creatively” (Coupland2007: 3). Both of the two scholars regard style as the linguistic resource and highlightit is closely related to the social world.

Many Chinese scholars also express their own understanding of style. The mostinfluential definition of style is given by Li Xizong. He analyzes ideas from differentschools, absorbs their essence, and adds his own point of view to define style as afunctional variation of the national language that is formed in the process of long-termusage. At the same time, during this process, style is adapted to contextual types thatare composed of special occasions, purposes, objects, etc. Specifically speaking, astyle is a series of language usage features including language materials and manners (e.g. tone, words, rhetoric means, syntax, etc.) which are limited by special contextualtypes (Li 2011: 2). From his definition, what can be inferred is that style is dynamicand it can be changed to adapt to different occasions, purposes, objects, and manners.

2.2 Language Ideology

Language ideology is an important concept in the field of sociology and it isclosely related to everyone. Generally speaking, its emergence and development haveexperienced a long period and the connotation of it constantly changes with thedevelopment of society. In this section, definitions of language ideology given bydifferent scholars and previous studies on it from various perspectives will bepresented.

2.2.1 Definition of Language Ideology

Before exploring the definition of language ideology, at first, the term ideologyshould be referred to. Etymologically speaking, ideology is composed of Greek words“idea” and “logos” which means “theory of ideas”.
