is one of the essential components of culture.Berube argues that“thestudy of culture is infused with aesthetic concepts”(Berube,2005:38).In a societydominated by whites, black cultural views, especially aesthetic views, are distortedand assimilated under the impact of cultural hegemony. The white employer’s kitchenis a space where white aesthetics are on display. It is a large, spacious room with“white porcelain, white woodwork, polished cabinets, and brilliant copperware”(Morrison,2004:83).There are many descriptions of white objects in the kitchen.Infact,“white”refers to more than just a color;it is an intangible ideology rooted inAmerican culture.“White”is recognized as a symbol of elegance, innocence andbeauty. The love for whiteness is the embodiment of white aesthetics and a reflectionof white supremacy.Mrs.Breedlove is surrounded by white objects in her whiteemployer’s kitchen, which means she is under the envelope of white culture.

Chapter Three African American women’s Kitchen as a Spaceof Resistance

3.1 Full Autonomy of African American women

In the society of white supremacy, the blacks’interests often conflict with thewhites’representations of space. As a result,African Americans engage in the spatialpractice that deviates from or even challenges white supremacy. As whites continue tocompress their space for the interests of whites,African American women also beginto resist, struggling to claim their own rightful space. The kitchen of AfricanAmerican women is a guarantee of privacy as well as a space of freedom. In theirkitchens,African American women have the right to determine what they bake, whenthey bake it,and to whom they bake it.In The Bluest Eye,African American women’sspatial practice resistant to whites’representations of space is manifested in threemain ways.First,Mrs.MacTeer has the freedom to complain about life’s chores andsing traditional black songs in her kitchen.Second,Mrs.MacTeer can display her lovefor the kids in the kitchen.Third,China curls her hair in her kitchen.

First,in The Bluest Eye,the MacTeers live in a leaky house, burning scavenged cinders and eating green leaves in the winter.Although the MacTeers are also havingtrouble making ends meet, they are a striking contrast to the Breedloves because theyhave a harmonious family and respect each other.Unlike Mrs.Breedlove,Mrs.MacTeer dedicates herself entirely to her own house, especially the kitchen. In Mrs.MacTeer’s house, the kitchen is her domain. She possesses absolute control over thisspace, and she is the supreme master of it.When Mrs.MacTeer hates someone, shewill forbid them to“eat out of one of her plates”(Morrison,2004:62).In contrast tothe cold kitchen of Mrs.Breedlove’s house,Mrs.MacTeer’s kitchen is always full ofactivities, and she is often left alone in the kitchen, talking to herself, complainingabout her tired life or insignificant things.Claudia and Frieda describe the scene as,“when sh论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
