The trilogy will be introduced respectively. In its first novel Oryx and Crake, young genius scientist Glenn, under the assumed name Crake, secretly develops a terrible virus, which is implanted into the pills releasing worldwide. When the virus spreads, almost all human beings are exterminated by deadly plague designed by Crake, leaving the protagonist Jimmy, or alias Snowman struggles to survive and gets along with the Crakers. The difference is that the focus of Oryx and Crake is the biotechnology elites and the big profit-making company in the “Compounds”, those who occupies a high position in society, while the second novel The Year of the Flood changes its narrative perspective. 

Chapter Two TECHNOLOGICAL DIET: ALIENATED FOOD

2.1 Technology Alienation from Food

Alienation is a social phenomenon in which the spiritual and material production of man becomes alien forces that in turn dominate themselves. Man creates food, yet this kind of control is a false cognition. According to Heidegger, “perhaps it is before all else man’s subversion of this relation of dominance that drives his nature into alienation” (“Poetry, Language, Thought” 144). As a senior food enthusiast, Atwood weaves about a future rich in food among her trilogy. People keep eating all the time due to the abundance of food raw materials and food processing technologies. With this setting, Atwood’s design of the fantastic food in the future could even turn into an individual system. In MaddAddam trilogy, the purpose of technology is not human liberation, but alienation and antagonism of interpersonal relationship: food has become an alienated industrial product, spreading an epidemic that no advanced technology can cure. The food “gestell” itself has come to symbolize the rotten sores of the postmodern world. From the politics of food, the author explores the political fields of power created by the ‘technological’ food in different places, and the social taboos for the weak people in various fields of power, to whom, eating is explicitly political.

2.1.2 Man eats man: meat processing industry

In the trilogy, the guidelines for eating get out of control and the thought of consuming technological food has become a social common sense to change everyone’s mind in this power field.
