In the Pleeblands, a kind of popular food named “SecretBurgers” in fast food restaurant chains has a good run in the market. However, Atwood hints at the darkness of its raw materials: “the secret of SecretBurgers [is] that no one knew what sort of animal protein [is] actually in them”, “during the glory days of Secret-Burgers, there [are] very few bodies found in vacant lots” (Atwood, “The Year of the Flood” 35). 4.1 Technological Body War

In the trilogy, technology has changed itself from an auxiliary tool to an instrument homogenized with the human body. The pursuit of transfiguration technologies induces the desire of people to optimize and corrupt their bodies, urging the speculative capital to invade into their bodies which become increasingly cheaper. The Compounds class draws support from their commercial consumption to establish a technology dominating human body. The Compounds’ bodily technology is “directed not at the growth of its skills, nor at the intensification of its subjection, but at the formation of a relation that in the mechanism itself makes [the body] more obedient as it becomes more useful” (Foucault 156). In the popular trend of body transformation in society, the only choice available to the residents in the Pleeblands is to be constrained by their class, which let them never have chance to optimize their bodies. Goods and service available to them are always under technological control dominated by elites. The monopoly of technology brings a new relationship of power, thus domesticating numerous docile bodies in society. As people in the trilogy are controlled by companies in the Compounds, human body also becomes a source of interest to different researches. Technological progress has led us to rethink the definition of genetic engineering, and it also brings out a question “[h]ow far can we go in the alteration department and still have a human being?” (Adami 258)
