ding contributions and abilities made by the colonies in this imperial defense and war have not been given any attention by the British government. In the first half of the 18th century, Britain has been watching the development of the United States from a distance. The colonies managed by the Americans themselves gained a good momentum of development. Until 1763, the British government’s management of colonies was mainly limited to colonial trade policy, and the British government had weak control over colonies’ affairs.

2.2 Rise of Colonies: Fanny and Susan

In the first chapter, Pride and Prejudice shows the cover progression of the change of British social structure under the impact of the Industrial Revolution, and Jane Austen’s attention to domestic class mobility. The change of social structure reflects the reorganization of order within the Empire in the transitional period. If we turn to the colonies outside the Empire, we will find that the outside of the empire is also full of crises. The independence and rebellion of the colonies further show that the Empire should adjust its policies in time to adapt to the impact of the domestic Industrial Revolution and the appeal of the free spirit of colonies. At the beginning of Mansfield Park, the novel introduces three women. Mrs. Bertram, who gets married and becomes a baronet’s lady. Her sister fails to achieve upward class mobility, marries a priest, and becomes Mrs. Norris. Both sisters stayed in Northampton, England, except the youngest sister, Miss Francis, who gets married and stays faraway in Portsmouth. From the perspective of overt plot, this is just a simple introduction of characters. However, in the covert progression, the relationship between two sisters and Francis implies the British Empire and distant colonies. The reason lies in the particularity of Portsmouth. Portsmouth is a site in both America and Britain. Portsmouth in Britain has always been famous for its status as a port of the Royal Navy. Portsmouth in America is an independent city in Eastern Virginia and the largest and oldest shipyard. In this way, whether in Britain or America, Portsmouth is closely related to the Navy. The heroine Fanny in the novel is the daughter of Miss Francis in Portsmouth. When Fanny appears in the novel, the author describes in such way “they may easily get her from Portsmouth to town by the coach, under the care of any creditable person that may chance to be going. I dare say there is always some reputable tradesman’s wife or other going up.” (Michael Mann, 1993: 12) According to Said in Culture and Imperialism, “To earn the right to Mansfield you must first leave home as a kind of indentured servant or, to put the case in extreme terms, as a kind of transported commodity-this, clearly, is the fate of Fanny and her brother William-but then you have the promise of future wealth.” (Edward Said, 1993: 88) This thsis argues that Fanny is transported to the British Empire as a representative of a colony, like ordinary goods. This loose adoptive relationship is like the alienation between the British Empire and the colonies, so Fanny is in danger of being expelled at any time. It is in this situation that she keeps silence in the beginning and sets foot on the road of rising.
