1 Task Description

1.1 Background of the Task

Due to rapid development of globalization and Internet readers now haveaccess to all genres of books written in different languages around the world.Thesetranslated books serve as a bridge between cultures and knowledge,sharing insightfulideas and knowledge and allowing people to learn from each other.Nowadays,agrowing number of people live under much pressure from work or study in acompetitive society.In this context,their mental and physical health may be severelythreatened,which may cause negative emotions such as uncontrollable anger,chronicfear,and debilitating sadness and psychological problems.Cases in this book showthat irrepressible emotions will lead to tragedies and fatal accidents.The translatorchose the psychology book Emotional:How Feelings Shape Our Thinking for itsacademic and practical value and hoped that translation allows readers to have aclearer picture of emotions and helps them to control and understand emotions.Apositive mood is the key to motivating people to make wiser decision and allow themto be well-prepared for challenges in the future.

Translation of selected text is to help enrich studies on translation ofpsychology books.Translating psychological book poses a challenge due to itsprofessional terms,hidden logical relationships and implicit information betweensentences.Translation is a process of analyzing,understanding and rewriting becausetranslator has to understand and interpret vague information to accurately convey themeaning of the text.

1.2 Introduction to the Source Text

Emotional:How Feelings Shape Our Thinking was written by LeonardMlodinow,who is a physicist and best-selling author.In this book,Mlodinowintroduces influences of emotions in people’s daily lives and provides readers withways to understand emotions better and to maximize their benefits.He shares somedetailed examples and personal insightful opinions to illustrate the physical andmental benefits of emotions.Human do not make decisions solely with our logicalminds.On the contrary,emotions are always part of our decision-making process,whether people are aware of them or not.This book uses logical,accurate,objectiveand formal language,in which vivid and humorous examples and enlighteningpsychological experiments are shared.The translator chose chapter 2 as the sourcetext for translation practice.

This text includes words with ambiguous conceptual meanings,omission of aword or words and implicit logical relationships between sentences.These elementslead to implicitness of some words and missing information of source text,imposing negative effects on understanding of text for readers.Therefore,learning how to dealwith implicitness on textual level is the focus of this report.

2 Process Description

2.1 Preparation before Translation

Translating one language to another language involves analyzing the sourcelanguage and target language for consistency and accuracy of translation.
