摘要:The meaning of the poetic image language is of multi-layer, polysemy, and fuzziness. The understanding of the deep meaning of the poetic image language is conditioned by the cultural context. In poetry, the head image words or phrases seem to be pretty crucial.
intimate relationship between husband and wife is reduced to relationship of sex.
Section Ⅲ "The fire sermon" is mainly devoted to the delineation of the contemporary people living a life filled with fleshly lust.
The first concrete image of lust is “Sweeney and Mrs. Porter”: “The sound of horns and motors, which shall bring Sweeney to Mrs. Porter in the spring. / O the moon shone bright on Mrs. Porter / And on her daughter / They wash their feet in soda water” (李俊清,2007: 114)In reality, Sweeney, as we can observe in Eliot's other poems, is no more than a whorehouse visitor, while Mrs. Porter and her daughter who wash their feet in soda water are both prostitutes. It's again a scene of possible sexual intercourse.
And the second one is “Mr. Eugenides”, a representative of all the people living in it, who speaks demotic French and invites "me" to have lunch at a hotel which is the gathering place of the homosexuals and then to spend a weekend at Metropole, another luxurious hotel, the invitation to which usually carries sexual implications.
The third image which is also the major one is the blind seer Tiresias, whom Eliot identifies as the “most important personage who unites all the rest”. As the poem’s spectator, Tiresias witnesses the loveless sexual act between the typist and the office clerk. The indifferent typist spreads her underclothes outside to let herself to be seduced. The young clerk is only eager to satiate his own sexual desire without taking even a little notice of his concubine's response.
2.3.2 The Abstract Sexual Passion Images
The title of section Ⅱ “A Game of Chess” is associated with the chess game in Thomas Middleton's Women Beware Women, in which a widow is distracted by the playing of a game of chess from the duke's rape of her daughter-in-law Bianca in the next room.
“Philomela” is another important image of sexual passion. It appears in the text as a nightingale.
The change of Philomel, by the barbarous king
So rudely forced; yet there the nightingale
Filled all the desert with inviolable voice
And still she cried, and still the world pursues,
"Jug Jug" to dirty ears. (李俊清,2007: 110)
Twit twit twit
Jug jug jug jug jug jug
So rudely forc'd.
Tereu (李俊清,2007: 115)
“Philomela” is the daughter of Pandion, king of Athens. On her way to visit her sister Procne, She was violently raped by her sister’s husband Tereus, king of Trace. When she threatened to accuse him, Tereus cut her tongue off with his sword and raped her again in her blood. At last Tereaus changed into a nightingale crying “Jug, Jug” to fight against the violence. The nightingale’s crying sounds continually all over The Waste Land which explains that such viol
