摘要：In this chapter, firstly it is necessary to look back at what has been achieved in this thesis, andmake a summary about the major findings of the research, and then followed by the someimplications for the further discussion. It will also be concluded with some limitations of the currentstudy and some suggestions for further studies.

1.2 Significance of this research
To the theoretical significance of the research, it may enrich Halliday’s theory of projectionclause; deepen the present theoretical foundation in studying on projection field. What’s more, thefindings of news discourse features in projection clause are likely to enrich and stretch the analysisof news text/discourse. News discourse as a research target text was neglected in the studying onprojection clause. The further description of relationship between projection clauses is a tentativebase of development of this research. To give the preliminary study on projection clause in terms ofthree metafunctions in news discourse is what the present academic field of it lacks. Furthermore,my desire for conducting this research is partly to apply the theoretical knowledge I have acquiredfrom the course – systemic-function approach to projection clause. It is of vital importance to enrichthe usage of existing theories to practice and analyze the function of projection clause in specificdiscourse/textTo the practical significance of this research, through the research on the projection clause innews discourse, the average reader may easily grasp the clear theme of the news reports; hopefully,the journalists will be guided well to cater to the readers’ reading habits that the readers usually careabout the general or sketchy understanding of the news.

1.3 Aims and objectives of this research
The present research aims to explore the metafunctions of projection clause, particularly revealhow different types of projection clause to express metafunctions in a specific text of English newsreports within the field of applied linguistics.However, a uniformed model or framework of studying the metafunctions of projection clausein news discourse is not settled yet. Thus this research is an attempt to suggest a model whichsystematizes the investigation on metafunction study of projection clause in news discourse. Thismodel should take into consideration the interplay of linguistic and non-linguistic knowledge whichare necessary to the interpretation of the metafunctions realized by the different types of projectionclauses which obtain across the news discourse. Of course, it is hard to exhaust all the types ofprojection clauses and its corresponding metafunctional details which may occur in news discourse.Thus the model suggested in this research is intended to encompass the major features whichemerged from my survey of those news reports and it is hoped it may provide a basis of furtherrefinement or counter-proposal concerning the study of metafunction.

1.4 The general organization of the thesis
The thesis is divided into five chapters. After this introductory chapter, Chapter 2 will bedevoted to a literature review of the major theories of “projection” research. Firstly what isconcerned is an introduction to the systemic-function approach to projection studies.
