2.1 Problem

The problem I am facing is that my table tennis shop has insufficient clients because of few choices on brands, short business hour and traffic jams.

2.2.1 Company’s current situation

There are mainly two kinds of customers:

1) professionals

Trainees from Shi Cha Hai Sports School account for 50% of our customers. They are loyal clients. We give a 5% discount to them.

Professional players from some table tennis clubs, who are a small percentage of the enrollment. They often order specific expensive goods from leading brands through telephone. I have a close relationship with them. We offer free delivery service.

2) amateurs
Students from nearby schools and residents living in local district, account for 45% of the customers. They usually come to the shop on weekend, and request our advices on brand choice.

2.2.2 Needs and wants analysis
To get a clearer idea of the views and opinions of customers about the problem, two focus groups were organized. We made face-to-face interviews with 10 clients.
The focus groups were as follows:
1)  5 professionals: 3 Trainees from Shi Cha Hai Sports School, 2 professional players from Ba Yi Table Tennis Club(八一队).
2)  5 amateurs: 1 pupil, 1 high school student, 3 residents.

Questions
1) Do you usually find the sort of equipment you need?
2) What do you think of the business hours at present?
3) What do you think of the prices the shop offers?
4) Did you ever engage online business?
5) Which one do you prefer: face-to-face business, telephone, online order, e-mail?
6) Can you accept delivery goods to your pointed place with an appropriate fee?
7) Do you have any suggestions for us to improve our service?

Complaints
1) They have few choices when considering buying equipment from a specific brand.
2) The present business hours are rather short. Amateurs would prefer to visit the shop later in the afternoon or evening on workday.
3) They spend too much time on traffic to arrive our shop just for a piece of rubber or a sweater.
4) The shop assistant, lacking experience of playing table tennis, cannot give appropriate advice on equipment choice.
