摘要:The present study is aimed to compare the reading comprehension componentsof CET-6 and IELTS in the aspects of reading texts and test tasks. The author believesthat this study has significance in the following three aspects.
2.2 Reading Skills
Reading skills can be defined as cognitive abilities a person uses when interactingwith written texts. Yang and Weir (1998) point out that “skill” is a careful andsubconscious process of applying linguistic skills to extract the main idea andimportant details. A great many achievements are made by numerous researchers inexploring reading skills in recent years. However, their theories vary concerning theissue whether or not reading skills can be further decomposed into sub-componentialskills.Munby (1978) identifies more than 70 micro-skills in the reading process. Basedon it, Hughes (1989) formulates two levels of sub-skills in reading, i.e., macro skillsand micro skills. The macro skills concern how to understand the general ideas in atext while the micro skills concern how to process the linguistic features of a text.Weir and Unrqhat (2000) proposes their taxonomy of reading skills in terms of theglobal level skills and the local level skills. They believe that reading skills at theglobal level involve understanding explicitly stated main ideas, inferring prepositionalmeanings, inferring pragmatic meaning, and skimming for the gist while readingskills at the local level include inferring lexical meaning, understanding syntax, andscanning for specific information.
