2.2 Previous Studies about Euphemism
Hugh Rawson (1981:1) stated "they (euphemism) are embedded so deeply in ourlanguage that few of us, even those who pride themselves on being plain-spoken, everget through a day without using them.,,So we can see that how importanteuphemisms are. Actually, lots of scholars have already paid attention to the usage ofeuphemisms. As what we have discussed in 2.2,euphemisms are closely related to taboos,which are used to show people's awe to the supernatural power. They didn't come intobeing until the fourteenth century. In the early 1580s,George Blunt,a British writer,put forward the term "euphemism" and added the definition of it---"a good orfavorable interpretation of a bad word” (Neaman & Silver, 1983,p.4). However,fromthe fourteenth century to the seventeenth century,the use of euphemism is restrictedto individual words without significant development.From the eighteenth century to the twentieth century, the study of euphemismbecame systematically little by little. In 1936, H. L. Menken, an American linguist,analyzed how and why euphemisms became prosperous in his book The AmericanLanguage,which leaves valuable knowledge about euphemism study.
