e headline are capable of successfully catching readers’attention at the first sight. As such, it is of great significance for the translators tocreate prominent and intriguing headlines to guide readers to the main body of thenews. However, there is rare research on the E-C translation of financial newsheadlines and some translators are not in possession of extensive linguistic expertiseor intercultural interpretation knowledge, resulting that sometimes an inappropriatetranslation appears inevitably and fails to meet target readers’ real demands. Hence,in order to make several helpful supplements to the translation study of newsheadlines and produce more acceptable and acclaimed Chinese versions of FNHs,the study chooses the E-C translation of FNHs as its research topic.

CHAPTER TWOLITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Definition and functions of FNHs

What is a financial news headline? What is the function of it? It is necessary forresearchers and translators to answer both the two questions before investigating thetranslation of FNHs.

2.1.1 Definition of FNHs

Fan Tengteng (2006) concluded that a news headline is defined in terms of its role,function and form. That is, the role of a news headline is to summarize and makecomment on the news content; the function is to induce readers to read the news;and the form is in concise wording.

Zhang Qianyao (2015) pointed out that a news headline is the summary of thenews content at the language level and it is characterized by a high degree ofconcentration. News headlines can be divided into virtual headlines and realheadlines according to their different presentation methods and emphases. Virtual headlines are mainly for the explanation of reasons and desires, whereas realheadlines mainly focus on the performance of specific characters, actions andevents.

Xiao He (2018) stated briefly that the news headline is defined as a rolesummarizing and commenting the news content, attracting readers to read andhelping readers understand the whole news.

Liao Chen (2017) indicated that the financial news headline is the head or titlewhich summarizes an article relating to money or finance in a few words, and itshould be informative, interesting and appealing to the readers.

2.2 Previous studies on translation of news headlines

After learning about the definition and functions of FNHs, in this part we will have abird view of the previous studies of news headlines from different perspectives andstudies of news headlines on translation theories and translation strategies.

2.2.1 Studies of news headlines from different perspectives
