ch rhetorical features and cultural elements. He made an analysis ofthe language used in newspaper headlines by means of linguistic devices anddiscussed the linguistic characteristics of English news headlines from the aspects ofgraphetics, graphology, vocabulary and grammar.

Wu Chunmei (2008) made a preliminary discussion on the characteristics of theten figures of speech in English news headlines and their corresponding translationmethods. The top ten figures of speech are rhyme (assonance, alliteration),personification, irony, rhetoric question, allusion, metaphor, pun, antithesis,metonymy and hyperbole. He stated that various rhetorical devices are usuallyadopted in news headlines to enhance the conciseness, visualization andinterestingness of language, and the purpose of headline translation is to be brief,accurate and eye-catching. Translators should strive to give consideration to thethree aspects in English-Chinese translation: accurately understand the title andcomprehend its beauty; take proper care of the characteristics of the target languageto enhance its readability; and attach importance to the reader’s receptivity. In short,when translating, do not copy the original text mechanically. Flexible translationmethods should be used to express the charm of the title and to attract more readers.
