Chapter I Introduction
1.1 Research background
With the increasingly international communication,translated works such as news,movies,TV programs,poems and novels are becoming the main media for people to get in touch with other countries’cultures.And this is certainly a wonderful thing for these works not only bring pleasure to Chinese readers,but also broaden their horizons.Many studies on these translation works also have been done. In the past few years,Harry Potter has swept almost the whole world.The series is written by J.K.
Rowling and it is a fantastic story about a boy wizard’s growth in magic world.The book series has got amazing success beyond people’s imagination in the last 15 years since the release of the first volume of the series,Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.It has no longer only confined to children literature because it has also won a big popularity among both children and adults—the British publisher Bloomsbury even released both children and adult editions of the series.Up until now,Harry Potter has been translated into 67 kinds of language and published in more than 200 countries and these books have sold more than 450 million copies.
In China,the series can not get great success without translator’s efforts because the Chinese version is the main media for readers to accept the novel.Translators,as the special readers of the original text and the producers of target text,will face many difficulties in the process of translation as they need to translate the original text adequately and try their best to convey enough information to target readers.To achieve this,apart from the necessary translation requirement,translators must also pay great attention to the features of target readers,such as their tastes,experience and appreciation levels.Reception theory could help translators a lot here.
The adequacy of translation is indeed necessary and it always attracts scholar’s attention,but the acceptability of target text should not be overlooked.Adequacy and acceptability are the two poles of translation and translation is a product of the interplay of them.The traditional translation theories’ focus is either on the author or the text,but the special characteristics of target readers are ignored. Reception theory,put forward by Constance School in 1960s,is more concerned with readers and the condition is changed.This literary theory claims that reader’s horizon of expectation should be highly regarded,and the meaning of text is indeterminate before reading but only concretized in the process of reading.As translated versions also involve the reception of text like literary works,reception theory has been applied to translation field.It could help translators a lot in producing more acceptable versions.
