With a deep concern for the current morbidity in Black community where Blackpeople suffer from displacement and alienation under the oppression of the dominantideology, Toni Morrison (1931-2019) and her works can be viewed as the epitome ofthe African American literature where the harshness, resilience and a glint of hope areacutely reflected. Arguing that “there is no place for Black people to think about, torecollect the absence of slaves” (Morrison 21), Morrison suggests the significance ofreconstructing a nurturing place for these rootless Black people. Tolbert also argues thatthe Black community in Morrison’s works is the epitome of her idea about home and“the site of resistance” (189). Therefore, her works can be regarded as the progressivemanifestations of her consciousness about how to reconstruct an inclusive Blackcommunity where Black people, being united by their shared history and culturalheritage, walk out of the abyss of alienation and regain a positive self-awareness.Specifically speaking, with a focus on reconstructing an inclusive Black community,Morrison’s works can be read from the perspectives of deconstructing the hegemonicideology in American society and exploring the possible ways of reconstructing Black community. All these have been clearly manifested in Morrison’s early three works,The Bluest Eye, Sula and Song of Solomon. The following part shall be a generalintroduction to Morrison and her early trilogy.
