1.1 Selection of the Source Text

Female Innovators Who Changed Our World: How Women Shaped STEM is a biographical literature work written by British author Emma Shimizu. The main reasons for choosing this book can be stated in the following two points.

Firstly, cultural contacts between nations have increased in frequency as a result of rapid expansion of globalization, and governments are increasingly pursuing cultural development as a means of strengthening their overall national power and elevating their standing internationally. Due to their distinct cultural history and particular creation conditions, biographical works serve as a vehicle for cultural transmission. Biography is a literary form, which mainly shows a person’s image and value by describing his life, deeds and personality characteristics. Biographies record the life and deeds of many outstanding figures in history, which have different values and significance in different historical periods, and their life experiences and struggle spirit are of great significance for future generations to learn.

Secondly, the life story and ideological achievements of the protagonist in biographies are important ways for readers to understand history and culture. By reading biographies, readers can learn about important events and figures in history, increase their knowledge and improve their cultural literacy. This book retraces the life stories of lesser-known female figures in the history of science, technology, Engineering, and mathematics, bridging the gender imbalance caused by historical inequality of status. By describing the growth process, learning experience and creative process of these outstanding female characters, this book can stimulate readers’ enthusiasm for learning and creation, and inspire readers to constantly pursue progress and breakthrough.

This part is about the analysis of the source text, which includes two sections. The first section is the introduction to the source text, from which a general idea of the source text can be grasped; the second section is the features of the source text.

1.2.1 Introduction to the source text

The book chosen for translation practice is entitled Female Innovators Who Changed Our World: How Women Shaped STEM, written by British author Emma Shimizu. Emma Shimizu is a British engineer who has a passion for improving lives and sharing her love of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics since her teenage years. She studied Materials Science and Engineering at university, specializing in tissue engineering and materials used in healthcare. Emma has been an active STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) ambassador for several years, and especially enjoys working with schools to introduce how science and engineering is used to shape our day-to-day lives. Emma currently works for a paediatric medical device manufacturer, liaising with different departments to plan and develop new products.
