In The Mirror for Magistrates,a first-person perspective is adopted by“Cordila”,and her narration centers on the tragic fall.It is“to ease my burdened brest andminde:/That others haply may avoide and shunne like thrall,/And thereby in distressmore ayde and comfort finde/”(21-25).There are two reasons why she wants to shareher experience. The first one is to unburden herself and get reliefed. The second one isto attempt to provide some experience for listeners, hoping that they can draw alesson from her tragic end.Her tragedy is connected to Leir’s flaw. From Leir’s experience, she narrates what flaws a good king should avoid and from his mistakeswhat can be learned by the ruling class.

1.2 The Political Propaganda in The Mirror for Magistrates

For the Tudor political theorists,to consolidate the reign of the ruling class ismore difficult than to create a new dynasty. In order to maintain the rule,an importantmethod is political propaganda, through which it might be easy for the ruling class towin support. The function of The Mirror for Magistrate is thus to preach down flawsthat officials need to avoid. It also has an influence on the civilians:they wouldsupport a government with good and efficient officials.

The Mirror for Magistrates is John Wayland’s extension of John Lydgate’s Fall ofPrinces which adapts tragic stories from the Old Testament and Greek mythylogy toexert an influence on the audience as“eclectic humanisitic learning”(Budra,2).TheMirror for Magistrates records the tragic falls of the eminent statesmen in Englishhistory. As Paul Budra pointed out,it is political, and since its publication,it was“hyndred by the lord Chauncellour”(2).It immediately attracted the officials’attention. There are four versions, and from the first to the last version,it just changedfrom a“politically corrective exemplar of the poetry/history combination into amundane and sentimental book of moral platitude”(2)and“Tudor propaganda”(3).The political function of this book is not changed. It is also a didactic poem and acounsel book, deeming that“History is nothing but Moral Philosophy, cloathed inExamples”(2).In the book, the ghosts set an example for the present, who is in theposition of authority. From the story of the precedents,it is beneficial for the presentto learn what they should avoid. It is in accord with its acclaimed purpose:“to teachthe monarch and other nobles wisdom and virtue by showing them the results of avariety of vices, including tyrany, ambition and pride”(Winston,381).It is like amirror and the noble readers can see themselves in the story. As William Baldwin, the editor of the first version, wrote in the prefatory letter,“For here,as in a loking glas, you shall see(if any vice be in you)howe the like hath论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
