5.1 The Characteristics of School-age Mandarin-speaking Autistic Children’s Narrative Cohesion
The first research question aims to investigate the overall characteristics of ASD children’s narrative cohesion. And in the current study, five grammatical cohesive ties are focused: reference, ellipsis, substitution, tense and aspect and conjunction. The research results, including the descriptive statistics, narrative sample analysis and the discussion on characteristics in cohesion, are presented in this part.
5.1.1 ASD Children’s Overall Performance in Cohesion
The frequency and adequacy of cohesive device are two important indicators in the evaluation of ASD children’s narrative ability in cohesion, which reveal the range and effectiveness of cohesive devices.
5.1.1.1 Frequency of Cohesive Tie
Firstly, it gives a brief introduction to the distribution of ASD children’s usages of cohesive ties. As is depicted in Table 5.1, the frequency and corresponding percentage of each cohesive tie are displayed. 16 ASD children make use of cohesive ties for 1268 times in total, and it is quite apparent that of all five upper-level categories, referential cohesive tie is used most frequently by ASD children, with the frequency of 411 and the percentage of 32.41%. In reference, ASD children use personal reference for 296 times and demonstrative reference for 115 times. And the tie of tense and aspect is ranked second with the frequency of 343 and the percentage of 27.05%, then followed by conjunction and ellipsis, whose frequencies are 337 and 148 respectively. In tense and aspect, autistic children tend to use more perfective auxiliary word le “(了)”, with the frequency of 309, than durative auxiliary word “ zhe(着)”. And it’s worth nothing that in conjunction, the usage rates are relatively low in causal and adversative ties. And substitution is least utilized by ASD children throughout their narratives, with the minimum frequency of only 29 and percentage of 2.29%.
