Governments in less-developed countries must implement a variety of appropriate measures to ensure that the poor in shantytowns will enjoy a decent standard of living.
Topic Sentence #1:
The movement of people from rural to urban areas has resulted in the establishment and proliferation of illegal uncontrolled settlements called shantytowns.
Key Points
People flee rural areas to escape extreme poverty and lack of work
The cities seem to offer a more stimulating life (more work and better living conditions) But jobs are not available in the cities so these migrants settle on the edge of big cities, thus establishing shantytowns
People in these shantytowns live without sanitation facilities, adequate health care facilities, and clean drinking water
It is estimated that between 30-60% of the urban populations of the LDC’slive in shantytowns (Seitz, 1995)
