Doctorow was born on January 6, 1931, a second-generation American of a Russian Jewish family who lived in America, New York. His family is a very musical family in that his mother is an outstanding pianist and his father ran a music business. Under the influence of his grandfather, Doctorow reads a lot of books which stimulates his interest in literature. Besides, Doctorow’s family provided him with a good education. The author was educated at the Bronx Science High School of Science at first and then went to Kenyon College in Ohio. After graduating in 1952, he studied at Columbia University. Later, Doctorow was drafted into the army for two years. Following his military service, he returned to his hometown, taking on an editor role and teaching at several universities. Eventually, he discovered a passion for writing and began his career as a writer.

Edgar Lawrence Doctorow (1931-2015) is hailed as one of the champions of postmodern writers in the contemporary era. Throughout his life, Doctorow published abundant works, including short stories, essays, plays, novels, and other works.
