Chapter One Authenticity as Realism in Mandy Oxendine

I. Facts in Personal Experience

The truth in autobiographical narrative, like the principle of “representation of reality” in documentary films, is a writing technique and strategy. How to skillfully apply this truthful technique to autobiographical writing is a question that autobiographical writers should consider. Autobiographical narrative is a narrative in which the author uses personal experiences as the material, but pays more attention to exploring the significance of these experiences for individuals in specific situations, with a view to discovering themselves, completing the construction of their identity, and expressing the author’s concern for growth.

1.1 Reenactment of Chesnutt’s Mulatto Identity

Charles Waddell Chesnutt (1858-1932) was born in Ohio and grew up in North Carolina. His grandfather was white, and his parents were both free mulattoes. From his appearance, he could hardly be identified as a mulatto. Chesnutt only graduated from primary school and became a self-taught person. Chesnutt is often mistaken for white. He is well aware of the temptation of wanting to pass for white people, because he wants to succeed according to the conditions set by white Americans, but his strong moral code does not allow him to be so vague, hoping to prove the intellectual potential of black people by realizing the writer’s dream.

II. Facts in Historical Narrative

Human beings cannot exist independently from the historical context. In autobiographical narratives, history truly demonstrates the relationship between individuals and the times. Historical facts can either hinder a person’s development or shape a person’s character. The writer himself form their own worldview and outlook on life through history, and consciously organize their language to reflect the history in his own eyes. And his choice of history and difference with the fact and its cause and significance are the main direction of our study of autobiographical narrative theory. Chesnutt lived in the second half of the 19th century, when the apartheid policy was raging. His identity as a mulatto made his perception of historical facts more sensitive and direct, making his works manifest a clear style of critical realism. Chesnutt’s description of the real details of history in the novel also filled in part of the blank of historical facts, which is of great significance to the study of racial history.

2.1 Recurrence of Historical Events and Social Circumstances

The Journals of Charles W. Chesnutt was written from 1874 to 1882, during the period of American reconstruction after the end of the American Civil War, but the situation of racial segregation is still very serious, and the lynching of the 3K Party is rampant, such as the famous Rose Town tragedy. Chesnutt’s first volume of The Journals ended in 1875. In the fall of 1877, when his second volume of journals began, his situation changed significantly. In the public sphere, this cross-period event marked the end of official reconstruction. This fact in North Carolina was marked by the complete fall of the Republican Party 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
