Doctorow is a skilled writer who uses stories about ordinary people to shed light on social problems in his works. In Homer and Langley, numerous plot points take place within the Collyer brothers’ house. The social acceptance of the Collyer brothers is too low. They are the upper class who live in Fifth Avenue in New York, and their ancestors all lived a rich and decent life, but in their generation, they live worse than their forefathers. Homer and Langley seldom leave their house and then there are all kinds of rumors about them. In fact, the behaviors of the brothers have not caused any negative impact on society. It is because their behavior is different from the mainstream behavior of ordinary people that the public can’t understand their behavior. Therefore, someone makes up guesses about the stories of the two brothers with their own imagination. Then more and more people regard the brothers as eccentrics despite the fact that they have never met the two brothers. The tolerance of society for them is extremely low. Even if they don’t do anything harmful to society, the public will attack them for being different and “strange”. However, beneath the surface of these intriguing plots, the struggles that the Collyer brothers face against the world in their own house are also revealed.
