摘要:The current study is to explore whether there is a correlation between recitation oflexical chunks and writing proficiency and to discuss how recitation of lexical chunks canbe applied in the teaching of college English writing and the implication of the study aswell.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Studies of Lexical Chunks Home and Abroad
In the history of foreign language teaching and learning, there are two traditionalteaching methods, one is the grammar-centered teaching method, and the other iscommunicative method. And these two teaching approaches need to be mentioned beforethe discussion of lexical approach. The first approach stresses grammar as the key oflanguage and the grammar system determining the language material arrangement. Tounderstand and master a foreign language, learners are required to memorize thegrammatical rules. The systematical study of grammatical rules do have its advantages inhelping students improve their ability to read and produce grammatically right sentences,and it is also easy for teachers to handle in their class because there is almost norequirement of classroom activities such as group discussion, pair work and so on. At thesame time, the disadvantage of this approach is obvious, that is, mastering a great numberof grammatical rules can neither meet the need of communication and practical use norguarantee the learners use these rules appropriately in real life situations. And the secondapproach, the communicative approach stresses learning to communicate in the targetlanguage and producing real situation in learning process. Unlike the grammar-centeredapproach which stresses the accuracy of language, communicative approach stressescomprehensibility. And this approach is now advocated by many applied linguists.Communicative approach do have its merits such as offering colorful learning andinstructing environment, and stresses both appropriateness and accuracy. The disadvantageof this approach should also be taken into consideration. The most obvious one is thatclassroom situation differs from real-life situation.

2.2 Studies on Recitation Home and Abroad
The definition for recitation in an English-Chinese Dictionary published by Oxforduniversity press for advanced learners is ‘‘public delivery of passages of prose or poetryleamt by heart. Simply, recitation is to restate the read text or sentence from memory. InLongman Dictionary, the notion of recitation is “to say something aloud from memory”.But the recitation in English teaching shares the following characteristics:The environmental factor in foreign language learning and teaching in China as wellas the great influence of traditional approach in Chinese mother tongue acquisition can bethe cause of employing of recitation approach. Recitation appears in an unsatisfactoryforeign language learning environment which differs from native English community. As amatter of fact,recitation is somewhat similar to one of the cognitive skills proposed byChamot (1987)—"repetition", which refers to the learner's imitating a language model,including overt or covertly practice and silent rehearsal (Ellis, 1994).
