1. Introduction
1.1 The Context and the Goal
The subject materials of this teaching plan derive from “New Practical English” (the second edition). The National Vocational College English Teaching Guidance Committee of the Ministry of Education organized the compilation of this teaching material, according to the “Fundamental Requirements for English Course in Vocational and Technical Colleges”. It takes “learn something, master it, and apply it”, “attach equal importance to listening, speaking , reading, writing and translating”, and “learning to use” as its principle, focusing on the training of listening and speaking skills, and the training of reading competence of the practical style. It aims to combine linguistic proficiency and foreign language communicative ability together. On the whole, the teaching goal of this material is to develop students’ ability of a practical application of the English language, and to truly inspire students’ interest to learn and explore English. The material focuses on the training of students’ practical ability of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each unit is divided into four 40-minute periods, with the target of training students’ capacity in all the four aspects. As to the educational methods, it requires teachers to focus on arousing the enthusiasm of students, keep on training skills, and establish an interactive and participatory approach. In other words, it pays attention to the interaction of students and teachers and the interaction between students, and it attaches great importance to students’ participation in the teaching process, with the aim of helping students complete the teaching goals in a relaxed and lively atmosphere. In the teaching process, it also lays emphasis on guiding teachers to design multimedia courseware with the full use of the modern teaching methods and network resources.
The materials in this teaching plan are selected from the book’s first unit Invitation. Students can only have an appropriate understanding of the text content in this unit with the cultural background of English-speaking countries. The teaching objects are the freshmen in an art college, who are supposed to have mastered the basic knowledge of the English pronunciation and grammars, have a cognition vocabulary of about 1,600 English words, and have been trained in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating.
1.2 Terminal objectives and Enabling Objectives of this Unit
Terminal objectives: It is hoped that students can master certain English basic knowledge and skills through learning, and have certain capabilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, especially that of listening and speaking. Thus they can have communications both in oral English and in writing in the common foreign-related activities and business activities, and lay a foundation for further improving their English communication skills in the future. What’s more, teachers should pay attention to enhancing students’ autonomous learning ability and their comprehensive cultural qualities, in order to adapt to the economic development and international communication needs.
Enabling Objectives:
Vocabulary. Students can remember a number of English words and their expressions and usages, spell correctly the commonly used words, and do English-Chinese and Chinese-English translations.
