Chapter Four Suggestions for Cultural Input in English Discourse Teaching in Private Universities

4.1 The objectives of cultural input
As we all know, to set up the goals is very important for any educational agenda. As forcultural input in English discourse, we need to make sure of its objectives and contents.For one thing, the aim of cultural input is to grasp the target language knowledge, to knowits features, to know the differences, the language, and social connotation of native languageculture and target language culture.For another thing, to emphasize the emotional goals is the second aim. The emotionalgoals involve language learners’ interests, curiosity and comprehension. The concept of culture is very extensive. When English teachers introduce the culture inEnglish class, not all the aspects of cultural content can be included in the cultural input,meanwhile, students’ ability to accept the culture knowledge should be taken into theconsideration. In addition, teachers should avoid much more subjective ideas when they choosethe concrete cultural content.

Conclusion

To begin with, at present, most English teachers have realized that the most importantobjective of college English teaching is to cultivate students’ intercultural competence so as toimprove students’ communicative ability. Meanwhile, they know the importance of culturalinput in English discourse teaching, but they do not introduce Western culture knowledgefrequently in their class, they are not very familiar with the effective approaches to culturalinput either. And they don’t know how to introduce related culture knowledge systematically incollege English discourse teaching. Secondly, there are no good textbooks for teachers to inputculture in private universities. Furthermore, most teachers in private universities have neverbeen abroad and never received any systematic training of cultural input, teachers should bearranged to take part in some training courses about cultural introduction and to know thecontent of cultural introduction, and be familiar with some methods of it. Finally, most studentscan realize the importance of cultural input in English course, and they are interested in Westernculture knowledge, however, they know a little about intercultural knowledge, and they don’tknow how to deal with cultural shocks.
