She maintains  her  distinctive  writing  style  in  Fingersmith,  which  was  set  in  the  1860s‟ London  and  viewed  as  her  most  outstanding  and  acclaimed  novel.  Hence,  based  on  a close reading, this thesis has done a comprehensive study of the novel. 

This  thesis  explores  the  female  Gothic  narrative  and  gender  politics  in Fingersmith,  combining  the  genre  study  of  female  Gothic  with  the  gender  study  of feminism, which shows that Sarah Waters self-referentially employs the genre of female Gothic  to  guide  the  reader  to  revisit  the  misrepresented  past  and  reexamine  the oppression and persecution that Victorian women went through in the cruel patriarchal society. Simultaneously, Waters gives a full and vivid description of what those lesbians suffered  under  the  suppression  of  heteropatriarchy,  and  how  they  were  marginalized, excluded from the mainstream culture and gradually forgotten in history.
