摘要:This paper discusses typical important festivals in China and Western Countries. Firstly, it introduces Spring Festival and Christmas respectively. And then it reveals the differences in origin and custom through the comparative study of Spring Festival and Christmas.
I. Introduction
The festivals embody the culture and the customs of a nation. Chinese civilization can date back to 5000 years ago, and many Chinese festivals originated from myths or are affected by the religious factors. But western festivals are inclined to be influenced by the western religion, like Christianity, or directly come from religious events. All the countries with different cultures have its own different festivals; the origin of these festivals can reflect the countries’ history and culture.
Chinese traditional festivals reflect Chinese nation’s long traditional culture. Most of the traditional festivals in China are based on the Chinese lunar calendar. Every festival has its historical origins with legendary allusions and unique culture connotations. Representing the traditional custom, moral tendency and religious concepts of the nation, every festival means a happy get-together from generation to generation since ancient times and it indicates the longing of the whole nation. China has a vast land and many ethnic groups, but festivals can make the whole nation celebrate or commemorate the same thing on the same day. In China, festivals contain more cultural flavors and historical stories. As to Western Countries, due to the rising of their positions, they make a tremendous cultural impact on the world. Though the world is not the first to have difficulty keeping the spirit of Christmas fresh in our minds, and the people often claim that people have “lost the true meaning of Christmas”——the light of generosity and divine love has always been easily obscured by human greed and selfishness. Somehow, the light continues to burn, century after century.
This paper discusses typical important festivals in China and Western Countries. Firstly, it introduces Spring Festival and Christmas respectively. And then it reveals the differences in origin and custom through the comparative study of Spring Festival and Christmas.
Ⅱ. Spring Festival in China and Christmas in Western Countries
2.1 Spring Festival in China
China’s traditional festivals have evolved through the centuries from past major events. The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is the occasion when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All the people living away from home will go back, so this usually makes transportation systems extremely busy during the Spring Festival.
2.1.1 The Origin and Development of Spring Festival
The Spring Festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, often one month later than the Gregorian calendar. It originated in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC-c. 1100 BC) from the people’s sacrifice to gods and ancestors at the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one.
The Chinese meaning of this festival is Guo Nian. Guo means “pass over” and Nian means “year”. The origin of the Chinese New Year Festival can be traced back thousands of years through a continually evolving series of colorful legends and traditions. According to one of the most famous legends, in ancient China there lived a horned monster named Nian who was extremely ferocious. Nian lived deep at the bottom of the sea all the year round and climbed up to the shore only on New Year’s Eve to devour the cattle and kill people.
