关键词:《献给爱米丽的一朵玫瑰》写作风格分析William Faulkner’s Writing StyleA Rose for Emily美国文学

摘要:A Rose for Emily, Faulkner pursues an artistic writing style which is connected closely with the realistic world. He brings the questions to readers not only through the simple fact but his complex form, which always make readers immersed with his thought.

There is one of the most remarkable feats in American literature: a young man who never graduated from high school, never received a college degree, living in a small town in the poorest state in the nation, could during the Great Depression write a series of novels which would one day be recognized as among the greatest novels ever written by an American all set in the same small Southern county. That great man is William Faulkner. He stands never taller than five feet, six inches, but in the realm of American literature, he is a giant. A Rose for Emily is one of Faulkner’s short story, and also can be said a representative. This short story really reveals Faulkner’s unique writing skills and his literary charm, and it is probably the best known to general readers.

 I. Epitome of William Faulkner and A Rose for Emily
1.1 Brief introduction of William Faulkner’s life
William Cuthbert Faulkner was born on September 25, 1897, in New Albany, Mississippi. When he was four or five years old, the family moved to Oxford, Mississippi, where he resided for the rest of his life. Faulkner demonstrated artistic talent at a young age, his earliest literary efforts were romantic, conscientiously modeled on English poets such as Burns, Thomson, Housman, and Swinburne.
Faulkner began his literary career as a poet rather than a fiction writer, but his poetry was undistinguished and commercially unsuccessful. He turned to the writing of prose in 1925. With Faulkner’s third published novel, Sartoris, which he completed in 1927, he “discovered,” as he said later, “that my own little postage stamp of native soil was worth writing about and that I would never live long enough to exhaust it and that by sublimating the actual into the apocryphal I would have complete liberty to use whatever talent I might have to its absolute top. It opened up a gold mine of other people, so I created a cosmos of my own.”(Warren,2000:35) During what is generally considered his period of greatest artistic achievement, from The Sound and the Fury in 1929 to Go Down, Moses in 1942, in a little over a decade,Faulkner accomplished more artistically than most writers accomplish over a lifetime of writing. He created a symbolic picture of the remote past to retell the recurrent story of human dreams, bravery, and defeat, to make a statement about the past and use that statement to talk about man’s lost in his world. In his life, there are 19 novels, 4 collections of about 70 short stories, and two volumes of poetry under his name.
William Faulkner was dead of a heart attack at the age of 64. He was buried on July 7 at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Oxford. The condolence come from the family all around the world and the press — including novelist William Styron, who covered the funeral for Life magazine, A family representative relayed to them a message: “Until he’s buried he belongs to the family. After that, he belongs to the world.”
Faulkner was the foremost southern writer of the 20th century in America. We can recognize the south vividly by its physical appearance and its people in most of his works. Yoknapatawpha County is the place which most stories occur and most of his characters live. Jefferson, the country seat of Yoknapatawpha County, is already the most famous country seat in the nation, and is as solidly recognizable as anybody’s hometown.
