The study of career women’s choice and planning in Hospitality Industry
1 Introduction
For almost 2000 years the economy was organized around the fact that women stay at home, take care of the children and do the domestic work, men being the ‘breadwinner’ (Donnellan, 2001, p14). In that way, men were able to work outside the home in part because women were doing all the other tasks (taking care of the children, of the home, of their cloths…). Therefore before the feminist movement, the traditional female was confined to role of homemaker and controlled by her financial independence on men, particularly her husband (Anderson, 2005).
However, in recent years, the increased number of women in the hospitality industry and their under-representation in top management positions has made women’s status in the industry a great concern. Over the past several decades, women have become a larger percentage of the workforce: 33% in 1960, 43% in 1980, and 45% in 1990. In 2003, 40% of the world’s 2.8 billion workers were women, an increase of about 200 million compared to the last decade, according to an analysis of female employment by the international labor office (ILO, 2004). On the other hand, there has been an improvement in the numbers of women promoted to higher positions: Women represented 20% to 40% of management positions in about 60countries (ILO, 2004).
Regardless of these improvements, women continue to be underrepresented in management positions compared to their overall employment. They also are inequitably hired, promoted, and rewarded.
The purpose of the study was to try to explore why women chose to working in hospitality industry, how they planned and pursued their career development and to what extent gender factors are affecting their career development. Based on the above answers, the dissertation will discuss what hospitality education program can do in order to better prepare women in high management positions and to reduce the barriers to women’s career advancement that may exist in the hospitality industry.
