摘要:In movie title translation, it is the most important for the translator to make the TT have the imperative function. To make the TT have the same informative function with the ST is less important. In practice, some English movie titles can be translated literally. However, most have some changes in their Chinese translations more or less.
euphemistic expression for the dead. Nevertheless, since the Chinese movie is so popular in China, the translation of the title of the” American edition “simply changes the original Chinese title a little into《无间道风云》or《无间行者》. To some degree such borrowing spares the translators’ efforts to find another one. Additionally, some Chinese terms are frequently used in the Chinese translations of English movie titles. Usually, they are used in partial metaphase and re-creation.
For example, someone translated Erin Brockovich into《阿莲正传》,similar to《阿甘正传》(Forrest Gump). In Chinese, “正传”means the story or life of somebody. The term“风云”usually means a stormy or unstable situation. Many titles of thrillers have this term to indicate the dangerous situation and attract audience. Miami Vice, The Departed and Casino are translated into《迈阿密风云》, 《无间道风云》and《赌城风云》respectively. All of them have the term.
IV. A Comparison between Different Translations
After we know some particular strategies for movie title translation, we can compare different translations in different regions in China. In this process we find some random translations and mistranslations in them and there is also some inevitable loss in translating an English movie title into Chinese.
People in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan have the same mode of thinking and cultural base. As a result, we can see that many English movies have the same TTS in the three regions, esp. those that can be translated literally. However, such examples are so few that even a title” needing no translation” has different translations.
For historical reasons, it is not long since H. K. returned to China and there is also a lack of cultural communications including movies between Mainland China and Taiwan. Then, sometimes an English movie title may have several Chinese equivalents in the market. We can compare some different TTS of one English ST in the three regions in the following table.
Original title Mainland China Hong Kong Taiwan
1 Unforgiven 不可饶恕 豪情盖天 杀无赦
2 Saving Private Ryan 拯救大兵瑞恩 雷霆抢救 抢救雷恩大兵
3 My Best Friend’s
wedding 我最好朋友的婚礼 真的想嫁你 新娘不是我
4 Lolita 洛丽塔 一树梨花压海棠 紧急情迷
From the above table, we can see some characteristics of the three versions. In
Mainland China, where there are the most Chinese audiences in the world, we intend to translate a movie literally if it makes a good title. The translators try to reserve the original specialties. That’s to say, if metaphase can make a good title, the Mainland translators usually don’t refer to other means
There are some advantages behind. Firstly, the audiences can have a comparatively clear idea about what the movie is about. They can get more information from the mainland titles than from those of HK and Taiwan. For example, . It does not tell us what is different in the plot from other love movies. Secondly, literal translation also avoids the errors which might occur in risky paraphrase and re-creation.
Also, even for those titles which cannot be translated by means of metaphase, the mainland translators try to tell us some plot about the movie
Generally, Hong Kong versions tend to be more civil and colloquial, and Taiwan versions have deeper cultural tastes. Versions in Mainland China are more orthodox. However, freer Hong Kong and Taiwan versions must exist within some degree. If we don’t consider the limit, indiscriminate use of paraphr
