摘要:In movie title translation, it is the most important for the translator to make the TT have the imperative function. To make the TT have the same informative function with the ST is less important. In practice, some English movie titles can be translated literally. However, most have some changes in their Chinese translations more or less.

ive
Usually, for a past participle in a movie title, we have to refer to paraphrase. The participle is a single word in English, yet its literal translation in Chinese may become too lengthy. On the other hand, the literal translation is often unnatural as a title.
The literal translation of Bewitched is“被施了魔法”, which is not appropriate as a movie title, though it tells us the main plot. In such cases, we often refer to the plot for a better TT. Its final translation is《家有仙妻》.
2) Noun Addition after Numeral
In the English language, we know the noun after the numeral can be omitted. Grammatically the omission does make sense. In contrast, in Chinese, we often add a noun to a number. For example, Fantastic Four is translated into《神奇四侠》. The addition of the character“侠”is a grammatical must. Also, it tells us who the four are.
Seven is another example. The title is so simple that it has only one number. As an English movie title, it is very good. “Seven” refers to the Seven Deadly Sins, i. e. lust, envy, greed, sloth, wrath, pride and gluttony. The plot develops around this number.
The literal translation“七”does not obey the customs of the Chinese language on the one hand. One number only without a noun is not in accord with the Chinese aesthetic standard. Seven has two syllables in English. By contrast, the pronunciation of“七(qi)”in Chinese is so brief that it does not impress us deeply. On the other hand, different language speakers have different thinking ways. Native English speakers quite accept abstraction. We Chinese audiences are more curious about what is modified by seven. The number 7 is not our focus. Considering from the perspective of the informative function for Chinese, 《七宗罪》is better. Here, “罪”means” sins”. Certainly, its imperative function is stronger.
Similarly, the Chinese translation of 300 is《斯巴达300勇士》to convey more information to the audience about the movie.
3)Articles
We know that the article in the English language is usually not translated. It usually does not affect the meaning in Chinese. Since movie titles are short, almost all articles in English movie titles, definite or indefinite, are not translated into Chinese, e. g. A Beautiful Mind vs. 《美丽心灵》, The English Patient vs. 《英国病人》. If the indefinite article is translated, it usually stands before a singular countable noun. Meanwhile, its appearance does not make the translation lengthy, e. g. To Kill a Mockingbird vs. 《杀死一只知更鸟》. Even for a singular noun without any numeral before it, we don’t translate the indefinite article. The article in the above-mentioned A Beautiful Mind is not translated, for we usually do not use“一个(a)”to modify“心灵(mind)”in Chinese. Similarly, the articles in A Walk in the Clouds《云中漫步》are not translated. If we want to reserve the article in the Chinese translation, both kinds of articles are translated into“一个,一位……”. Demonstrative pronouns like“这个(this)”,“那个(that)”, etc. Almost don’t appear in Chinese titles. In this sense, in movie titles, the definite and indefinite articles seem to make little difference. Additionally, English movie titles sometimes have no article or numeral even before a singular, countable noun like Mystic River, Gladiator and Match Point. Such cases are quite similar to Chinese titles, which have few unimportant numbers.
4) Singular and Plural
Countable nouns in English have singular and plural forms. However, a Chinese word doesn’t h论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
