To make the TT have the same informative function with the ST is less important. In practice, some English movie titles can be translated literally. However, most have some changes in their Chinese translations more or less.

However, we usually find that it is actually difficult or even impossible to reserve all the original functions in the TT, esp. the informative function. In view of Skopostheorie, the most important function for a movie title is its imperative function, i. e. drawing audiences, not the informative function. Also, the aesthetic function is of much help for the imperative function.
In movie title translation, the TT can have different informative functions, i. e. a movie can have several names from different perspectives, but all of the titles must have the imperative function. In other words, it is the Skopos of translating a movie title to make the TT have the imperative function. Therefore, the Skopos here requires intratextual coherence unless we translate movie titles just for academic research. That’s to say, the target audience can understand the TT in their culture and they are at least apt to accept the TT. To ensure intratextual coherence, the TT does not necessarily have intertextual coherence with the ST. Metaphase and re-creation are particularly used in movie title translation.
3. 2 By Means of Metaphase
For the titles that can be translated literally, fidelity usually means intratextual coherence. A translator can begin title translation directly without seeing the movie in advance. Here, we can get the TT by means of total metaphase.
3. 2. 1 Total Metaphase
Some movie titles can be translated literally into Chinese since they cater to Chinese tastes. We can say that almost every movie title is translated literally first, and then we view whether the literal translation is acceptable. If the TT makes sense and is agreeable for us Chinese audience, metaphase is generally the best way. We can even say these movie titles” need no translation”. This kind of titles is usually nouns or noun phrases, e. g. Independence Day, Wall Street, Pride & Prejudice, etc. Their Chinese translations are《独立日》, 《华尔街》and《傲慢与偏见》.
In translating movie titles, we see that some words are policemen. Here we should consider deliberately what they really mean according to the content of the movie. For example, “pulp” has at least two meanings. The prologue of Pulp Fiction, a classic movie, even shows its meanings on the screen.
