/> It is important to research modal verbs in CIPL Corpus, for modal verb is a way to convey thelegislators' opinions. It is important to discover the differences on the use of modal verbs between CIPLand Brown Corpus. So the research of the thesis is necessary to be carried out.As a kind of language and an important way to inform certain regulations and rules, legal text is aquite influential and common way for people's interaction. It is a key way to inform certain rules andregulations for legal language, hence what is conveyed from the legal text is very important for the peopleinvolved in this field. It is very useful to leam the use of modal verbs in legal text, because it can help us tounderstand the main viewpoint of text and comprehend the inner meaning of the legal text; it can helppeople infer the Legislators' attitudes towards people or things; it is also hoped to be of some help to thegraduate students major in English, who is studying translation of English law. What's more, it may makeChinese legislation known by the foreigners, and catch up with the pace of the world. Therefore, the studyof modal verb in CIPL is valuable.In the past, there were lots of previous studies on legal text in the field of applied linguistics, however,many studies in the traditional research field only use qualitative method to analyze. Hence it is necessaryto employ new research methods-quantitative method on the topic. This paper uses methods of bothqualitative and quantitative analysis in the field of CIPL.

1.4 The layout of the Thesis论文结构
This thesis consists of five chapters.‘Chapter One presents background, questions, significance of research and the layout which is relevantto the study.Chapter Two is the literature review. It reviews the relevant theory, definition of modal verbs,categories of modal verbs, value of modal verbs, polarity of modal verbs, and interpersonal function insystemic function grammar. These theories form theoretical framework of the thesis.Chapter Three introduces the research methodology employed in the paper, the corpus compilationand description, data collection and research tools applied in the study.Chapter Four is the core of the paper. This part gives a detail analysis which is based on the theory inchapter two. The frequency of modal expression, the value of modal verbs expression，polarity of modalverbs are analyzed and discussed in detail.Chapter Five makes a overall conclusion on the study. It summarizes the major findings and researchlimitation of the study. It also gives suggestion to the scholars in legal language field for future research..
