1.1 Important terms

1.1.1 Textbook evaluation

Sheldon (1988) defines coursebooks as commerciallypublished books for Educational use. According to Tomlinson (1998: ix),a coursebook is a textbook which provides the core materials for a course. Itaims to provide as much as possible in one book and is designed so that itcould serve as the only book which the learners necessarily use during a course.Such a book usually includes work on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation,functions and the skills of reading, writing listening and speaking.For Ur (2000), a course book is a textbook “of which both the teacher and students have acopy, and which is in principle to be followed systematically as the basis for a languagecourse” (Ur 2000: 183)

In a traditional sense, a textbook, “the core materialsfor a certain language programme" (Chen 2002: 11), is a published book for commercialgain. It mainly refers to a student's book. However, to some scholars, a textbook is nolonger a student's book, nor is it only in the form of books. Wang (2002: 168) states thattextbooks in traditional pedagogy have evolved into a great variety of resources used inlanguage classroom such as teacher's books, workbooks, flashcards，cassettes, videos,CD-Roms, etc. Therefore, Hutchinson & Torres (1994: 328) define a textbook in a broadsense as “an organized and pre-packaged set of teaching or learning materials which may be bound in just one book or distributed in a package, such as the familiar coursebook,workbook, teacher's guide, and cassettes."In addition to “coursebook，，，the term “textbook” is sometimes used interchangeablywith "materials" or “teaching materials”. In a broad sense, materials or teaching materialsdo not only include textbooks.
