摘要:This study attempts to explore the formation and development of the Chinese EFLlearners' mental lexicon. In so doing, it is hoped that some conclusions and implicationsthat may shed some light on EFL vocabulary teaching and learning be arrived at oncompletion of the study.
Chapter 2 Literature Review
Theoretical and empirical literature on bilingual mental lexicon has looked at a widerange of issues, ranging from models of the bilingual mental lexicon, to semanticrepresentation and word processing in the mental lexicon. This part will give a briefreview of theoretical and empirical literature on the bilingual mental lexicon carried outboth in China and abroad.
2.1 Studies of Bilingual Mental Lexicon Abroad
Studies related to the bilingual mental lexicon are usually complicated asresearchers have to take into consideration both the L2 lexical system and the preexistingLI lexical system. This part will give a brief review of the studies on bilingual mentallexicon carried out abroad.
2.1.1 Theoretical Studies
The core issue in the studies of bilingual mental lexicon is: how L2 words are storedand connected in the mental lexicon? To answer this question, it is necessary to figure outwhether the bilingual mental lexicon consists of two separate systems for the twolanguages, or of one integrated system in which knowledge from both languages isshared.Many and various studies have been conducted to seek answers to this question.Weinreich (1953) is among the first researchers who have addressed themselves to thestudy of the organization of the mental lexicon. He proposed three possible organizationsof word knowledge in the bilingual mental lexicon; compound (LI and L2 forms areconnected at the meaning level), coordinate (separate system of form-meaningconnections exist for each language) and subordinate (L2 word forms are connected toLI meaning through primary connections to LI forms), and he further assumes that thethree different types can coexist in different individual bilinguals.
