摘要:The systematic analysis of learners’ collocational errors couldnot only deepen teachers’ understanding of learners’ language learning process, but alsohelp to evaluate their teaching method and teaching process. What’s more, researches oncollocation and collocational errors provide evidence for how learners learn and acquirelanguage and acquisition characteristics in learning process.
Chapter 2 Literature Review
This chapter will first report lexical collocation theory, including the definition andclassification of collocation and some previous studies. Then it will review literature onEA theory including some related information and related studies.
2.1 Lexical Collocation Theory
2.1.1 Definition of Collocation
Collocation serves as a lexical phenomenon in linguistics. More and moreresearchers tend to investigate collocation. Although the importance of collocation iswidely known, it is difficult to establish a comprehensive definition of collocation(Benson, 1997). The definition of collocation has always been subjected to debatebecause different researchers define it from different perspectives for different researchpurposes with different methods.J. R. Firth is acknowledged as “the father of collocation”. Collocations, from Firth’s(1957: 99) viewpoint, can be regarded as “words in habitual company”. He has an ideaof “meaning by collocation” can be treated as “lexical meaning at the syntagmatic level”.Meanings of words should be understood by their adjacent lexical units co-occur withthem. Collocation only focuses on content words rather than grammatical ones (Firth,1957). Firth brings the collocation study in lexical research into eminent, and also thisunderstanding of word meaning in semantic method challenges and breaks through theformer structural method. All in all, his research on collocation sets up a theoretical basisfor later collocation studies.
