Chapter Five Conclusion

This paper used data collected from Google Books Ngram Viewer, including aset of monosyllabic, disyllabic and trisyllabic adjectives, and examined and analyzedthis corpus of data. On one hand, this paper made use of previous research conductedby academic celebrities such as Leech and Culpeper, Kyt  and Romaine, Mondorf,González-Díaz, and others; on the other hand, it analyzed some new corpus data inorder to present some new findings. The content of the paper can be summarized asfollows:Chapter Two presented diachronic aspects of this topic: the origin of the analyticcomparative, the evolvement of comparative formation with the development of theEnglish language and the comparative formation in present-day English, based ondata collected from the Google Books Ngram Viewer. We found out that the syntheticform is historically earlier and the occurrence of analytic formation results fromlanguage-internal causes instead of language contact, and that the simplification ofinflection during Middle English Period may have something to do with thepreference of analytic formation in later English usage. We hypothesized that Englishis progressing towards an analytic language step by step. The frequency factor wasexamined with regard to the data collected in the research, which shows that thefrequency factor plays a role in the choice of the comparative formation: in the samegroup of adjectives with the same ending, the higher the frequency of the adjective,the greater the possibility of synthetic forms being selected as the comparativestrategy.The third chapter concentrated on the synchronic research on English adjectivecomparison. It examined the monosyllabic, disyllabic, trisyllabic and someconventionally non-comparable adjectives to find out about their choice ofcomparative formation in present-day English usage. This chapter explores thatamong monosyllabic adjectives, native English adjectives adopt the syntheticcomparative to a high degree while those of French/Latin origin more likely favoranalytic comparatives. This also led to the further research on the influence of theorigin of adjective on the choice in Chapter Four.
