to Jespersen (1924) was the first one to introduce the term nominalization in hisbook “The Philosophy of Grammar”. It can be concluded that his proposition ofnexus-substantives is today’s verbal nominalization and adjective nominalization.However the definition does not touch upon the clauses.In 1985, Randolph Quirk in his A Comprehensive Grammar of the EnglishLanguage stated: A noun phrase which relevant systematically with a sentence structureis categorized as nominalization. “This type of phrase’s noun head relates to a verb oradjective in lexical aspect” (Quirk, 1989). However Quirk classified these conversionsto lexical category rather than syntactic category. To some extent Quirk’s proposal waslimited.Famous cognitive linguist Ronald W. Langacker’s work Cognitive Grammar-ABasic Introduction came out in 1991.As to him nominalization is defined as:“Semantically, the nominalization consists in the conceptual reification of this activity,producing an abstract thing which is profiled by the noun” (Langacker, 2008).However his theory does not fit with nominalization of adjectives, which also take thequality and assessment as entities.

2.2 Approaches to the Study of Nominalization
Man’s cognition of this language phenomenon deepens with the development ofthe society. As far as we date back to the earliest study, Plato and Aristotle have begunto investigate the phenomenon. From then on, this great language phenomenon has beeninvestigated by various linguistic schools from their own perspectives. They givevarious conclusions. The review of the previous study of nominalization is hoped tolight up the present research. The scholars of the main linguistic branches, whichinclude structuralists, transformational-generative grammarians and cognitive linguists,have already done the following works as it is introduced next, with the aim to analyzethe subject nominalization in full picture. The representative structuralism linguist puts out that the filling types ofgrammatical structure make a division between the concrete word classes andgrammatical categories. Those word classes and grammatical categories cannot conveyany information, only when entering their language structure. On account of thesepoints, linguists of this school did not put forward the definition of nominalization, butanalyzed the classifications of words by applying the Immediate Constituents Analysis.
