摘要:In America, the American philosopher, physiologist and psychologist William James cameup with the concept of a dualistic memory theory, that is, primary memory and secondarymemory, which are the base of progressive memory theory.

erwards, Jacobs performed a similar experiment and came to aconclusion that the capacity of short-term memory is approximately 7. The cognitivepsychologist George A. Miller of Princeton University's Department of Psychology in the USApublished an article, The Magical Number 7, plus or minus 2.He argued that the number ofobjects that an average human can hold in working memory(short-term memory) is 7 plus orminus2. The chunk means that transforming a number of smaller units into familiar and largerones. It also refers to the composition of such units. Therefore, although the capacity ofshort-term memory seems to be limited to 7units, chunking can increase people's memorycapacity, for the function of chunking is to decrease the stimulating units of short-term so as toincrease the information in each unit. The way of chunking depends on each person's experience.The richer a person has knowledge and experience, the larger information a chunking cancontain. And different ways of chunking can result in different numbers of chunking. If we takeadvantage of the theory of short-term memory capacity to help memorize English words, we willreduce the memory burden and improve the effect of memorizing words.

2.2 The theory of Understanding Memory
Understanding memory method refers to the method of remembering learning materials onthe basis of positive thinking and deeply understanding. The underdeveloped condition ofunderstanding memory is to process the learning materials by considering. If some learningmaterials are meaningful, people should understand them before they bear them in mind, which means that people should grasp the characteristic of each part of materials as well as the initialassociation of them and fit them into the existing knowledge structure so as to bear them in mindwith the help of the existing knowledge and experience. The first step of understanding memoryis to understand the content of the materials firstly. Here the understanding doesn't mean not onlyreading the material, but also get a clear understanding of the relationship between each part ofthe material as well as the relationship between this material and previous knowledge andexperience. People often think that understanding is the first step to memory as well as the basisof memory. Therefore, understanding is also the most essential and effective method. Thefamous Czech educator Comenius once said that first of all, students should learn to understandthings and to remember them again; only through a thorough understanding and memorizingthem can they be seen as psychological property. It follows that understanding is of greatimportance in the process of learning.
