The Gap Year
Nine per cent of UCL’s undergraduates elect to
take a gap year between school and university.
The majority use this gap year to work in
industry or a profession relevant to their
degree, to travel or to undertake voluntary
work either in this country or overseas. Nearly
all departments at UCL encourage students to
do this provided that they have a structured
plan and know what they want to achieve.
UCAS rules allow for students to apply for
deferred entry and UCL is normally happy to
allow this. A gap year can bring benefits to
students, not the least of which is a broadening
of perspective and an increase in maturity.
The Year in Industry (YinI)
UCL supports the Year in Industry scheme
whereby students use their gap year to
undertake a structured placement in an
industrial company. Although the YinI scheme
takes mainly those about to start degrees in
the various engineering departments and in
the physical sciences, students studying
English and geography have also been
successful in obtaining a place.
Sumayya Khanum, a third-year student
studying for the MEng degree in Engineering
with Business Finance, spent her gap year on
the Year in Industry scheme working with the
Jaguar F1 Team in Schools Ltd. She writes:
My decision to take a gap year was spontaneous,
however it proved to be an excellent choice. I
held the position of National Project Assistant
for a CAD/CAM project targeted at schools
across the UK. The project was set up and
maintained by Jaguar Ltd, BAE SYSTEMS and
many other engineering companies.
Working closely with large engineering
companies showed me the level of excellence
in engineering throughout the UK and
reassured me that I wanted to be part of this.
My position mainly involved working in
project management, marketing and
sponsorship roles, and consequently I realised
that it is imperative for engineers not only to
have a strong background in technical aspects
of their work, but also to have an
understanding of economics and finance
which are the backbone of any company or
organisation. Hence I decided to study
Engineering with Business Finance at UCL.
My gap year was organised by The Year in
Industry, which is sponsored by the Royal
Academy of Engineering, whose influence
ensured that students were allocated positions
within various companies which involved
participating in ‘real’ projects and were not
simply left to make the coffee.
Gaining work experience in the field you want
to go into helps you to appreciate and
understand not only what your degree is about
but also why you are doing that degree. I would
