2 Literature Review


2.1 A Brief Introduction to the Chapter
A serious problem identified with research into homework is the lack of acommonly accepted definition of homework (Julian Forester. 2001).Researchers havenot always made explicit what they have defined as homework for the purposes oftheir studies. If homework were implicitly defined as including all test andexamination studies, private study and tutorials, results of research would be expectedto differ from studies where only specifically-set practice, revision and extensionexercises were defined as homework. Studies which have provided definitions ofhomework are also disparate. Definitions range from the simple 'work sent home'(Louise Cooper.Pupils.2006) to detailed definitions such as 'the time students spendoutside the classroom in assigned activities to practice, reinforce or apply newlyacquired skills and knowledge and to learn necessary skills of independent study'(Jeremy Haroer. 2005). While Butler clearly still failed to clarify what types ofactivities were included. Did homework include work done in free periods, and didit include private study and study for tests and examinations? It is important that theactivities, as well as the purposes of homework be made clear.

2.2 The Previous Study on Homework Assignment


2.2.1 Studies at Home
Homework is an indispensable important component during the teachingactivities. Students are almost growing up with all kinds of homework, compared tothe European countries, our country started relatively later about homework problemsresearch. Domestically speaking, there are few special operations on this study. Inrecent years, due to advocate the quality education, with the hot topic of the unloadinggrows , we could meet more homework researches than before ,however, most ofthem are lack of the depth research, the essence of the targeted research, only a fewvaluable researches are just work on time of homework, Domestic situation at present ,about homework researches mainly focus on twoaspects, on the one hand, most domestic researchers generally believe that with thepromotion of the new curriculum reform, the traditional homework concept 、 form、content、process and evaluation already cannot adapt to the requirement of the moderneducational development, the existing homework model need to be improved urgently;On the other hand is to introduce foreign advanced scattered experience. In his book, Chinese scholars Xin Jixiang (2010) divided the teachingmaterial into three systems: subject system, image system and homework system, healso pointed out, if the homework system could be arranged quite well, it willpromote the students' abilities on self-study ability and practice ability, also is quitehelpful for teachers to improve the teaching methods. Song Qiuqian (2008) fromZhejiang Ocean University said that in his book , to arrange the effective students’homework (effective implementation of the homework strategy 2007) ,first of all ,teachers must adhere to the students’ opinions as a foundation , modern teaching andnew curriculum should accord with each other.
