Chapter Four Man and Man: The Loss of Family Ethics in The FifthChild and Ben, in the World

4.1 The Ethical Predicaments of Family Members

According to the plot of the novel, it can be known that Ben’s family is composed of acouple, David and Harriet, and five unmarried children. This kind of family structure is calledthe nuclear family in sociology, while the middle-class nuclear family is also known as themost solid family structure. The narrative of Doris Lessing in The Fifth Child shows that theparents of the protagonist are a couple of social people who have completed the theory ofbiological evolution and have complete ethical awareness and identity. In addition, Ben’sgrandparents are also civilized and polite. However, Ben, who was born in such a civilizedfamily, was not recognized because of his characteristics different from ordinary people.Instead of receiving care from the family, Ben was identified as the culprit that disruptedfamily harmony and caused the family to fragment. Almost all family members thought thatthe fifth child made them lose their original happiness and fell into the ethical predicament.“Ethical predicament refers to the intractable contradictions and conflicts caused by ethicalconfusion in literary texts. There are many manifestations of ethical predicament, of which theethical dilemma is one of the most important manifestations” (Nie 2014).

Chapter Five Man and Society: The Loss of Society Ethics in The FifthChild and Ben, in the World

5.1 The Loss of Personal Professional Ethics

With the development of social division of labor and the emergence of relatively fixedoccupations, professional ethics comes into being. The concept of professional ethics can bedivided into broad sense and narrow sense. In a broad sense, professional ethics refers to thecode of conduct that employees should follow in their professional activities, covering therelationship between employees and service objects, occupation and employees, and differentoccupations. In a narrow sense, professional ethics refers to the professional code of conductand norms that should be followed in certain professional activities. It can reflect certainprofessional characteristics and adjust certain professional relations. Professional ethics is akind of professional norm formed naturally for a long time, which is generally recognized bythe society. It has no definite form, usually embodied in ideas, habits, beliefs, etc., which needto be realized through the self-discipline of practitioners. The improvement of professionalethics will help improve the moral level of the whole society. In these two novels, there areobvious violations of professional ethics, which are reflected in two aspects: doctors who lackmedical professional ethics and teachers who lack professional ethics.
