Chapter II Distortion: The Narrative Time

1. Order: Suffering Racism both in the Past and at Present

Order refers to the relative relationship between story order and narrative order.According to Genette, to examine the order in the process of narration “is to comparethe order in which events or temporal sections are arranged in the narrative discoursewith the order of succession these same events or temporal segments have in thestory.” (Genette, 1980: 40) The story order is the order of the story’s development.The story order is unchangeable and chronological. It means that story order followsthe plot’s development. On the contrary, the narrative order is the order that thenarrator tells the story. It displays through the text order. In other words, the narrativeorder is shown from the beginning to the end of the text. Meanwhile, the narrative order is changeable based on the narrator’s arrangement.

According to Genette, the order can be divided into two types: prolepsis andanalepsis. Prolepsis refers to “narrate in advance an event that will take place later.”(Genette, 1980: 40) It means that the narration order is earlier than the story order.While analepsis refers to “an event that took place earlier than the point in the storywhere we are at any given moment.” (Genette, 1980: 40) It means that the story orderis earlier than the narration order. Meanwhile, anachrony means “all forms ofdiscordance between the two temporal orders of story and narrative.” (Genette, 1980:40) Anachrony makes the text disordered and chaotic.

2. Duration: Reappearing Alienated Community

Duration is the rhythm of the narration. It is defined by Genette as “theconnections between the variable duration of these events or story sections and the pseudo-duration (in fact, length of text) of their telling in the narrative”. (Genette,1980: 35) “The speed of a narrative will be defined by the relationship between aduration (that of the story, measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, andyears) and a length(that of the text, measured in lines and pages).” (Genette, 1980:87-88) Duration is shown through the different length of text. By using the differentnarrative duration, the narrator changes the rhythm of the story. It makes the readersunderstand the plot better.
