he was on Pecola, and with the back ofher hand knocked her to the floor...Pauline yanked her up by the arm, slapped heragain.” (Morrison, 2007: 82) Pauline blamed Pecola for her incaution and abusedPecola “crazy fool”. (Morrison, 2007: 82) She throws her daughter out of her whitemaster’s house. This scene describes Pauline’s extremely cruel mistreatment towardsher own daughter Pecola. Singh (2012) has illustrated that Pauline was a negativemother figure whose crudeness and coldness resulted in her daughter’s madness.Pauline abuses her daughter as a fool and beats up her daughter violently. Pecola isless important than the floor in her white master house for Pauline. However, whydoes Pauline ill-treat her daughter?

Chapter III Alienation: Characterization

1. Black’s Internalized Racism Expressed in Action

Based on Rimmon-Kenan’s theory, the characters’ personal traits can beanalyzed from their actions which are “one-time actions” (Rimmon-Kenan, 1983: 63)and “habitual ones.” (Rimmon-Kenan, 1983: 63) The one-time actions mean that theaction only occurs one time. Habitual actions refer that the action that occurs manytimes. In The Bluest Eye, Pecola Breedlove is a 12-year-old black girl whose family ispoor. She is discriminated by the white, bullied by the black, and harassed by themixed blood. Pecola’s traits become obvious through the following action analysis.

According to Rimmon-Kenan, habitual actions always show “the character’sunchanging or static aspect.” (Rimmon-Kenan, 1983: 63) Habitual actions alwayshave “a comic or ironic effect.” (Rimmon-Kenan, 1983: 63) Pecola is fond ofdrinking milk with Shirley Temple cup and eating the candy of Mary Jane. These twoactions are habitual actions that show Pecola’s characteristics vividly. She likes to eatMary Jane Candy because each pale yellow wrapper has a white girl Mary Jane’s picture on it. Images on the cup and the candy wrapper are all white girls who haveblond hair, blue eyes, and white skin. The innocent and pure girl, Pecola, believes thather eyes would become as blue as Mary Jane’s and she would become a white girlafter drinking milk with Shirley Temple cup and eating Mary Jane candy. Pecola’sinnocence is shown by the habitual actions. Meanwhile, Pecola prays for blue eyesevery night. “Each night... she prayed for blue eyes.” (Morrison, 2007: 46) Thishabitual action reveals the little girl’s persistence for blue eyes. By the same token,Frieda MacTeer likes the white girl Shirley Temple as deeply as Pecola. Friedaalways talks with Pecola about how cute Shirley Temple is. This is also the habitualaction exemplifying the论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
